Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
There are no exact causes of SLE but several genetic and environmental factors are suspected. People with lupus often may have family members with autoimmune diseases. Also, hormonal changes in women, drugs and other environmental factors may trigger SLE. The exact cause of lupus is not known. Experts believe that some people are born with certain genes that affect how the immune system works. These people are more likely to get lupus. Then a number of other things can trigger lupus attacks. These include viral infections, including the virus that causes mononucleosis, and sunlight.
Although these things can trigger lupus, they may affect one person but not another person.Symptoms
In Ayurveda this is considered a chronic disease that affects the joints and muscles and reduces body immunity, causing degeneration of the tissues. When body tissues deteriorate and body immunity and strength reduces below a certain point, the body cannot fight the disease and an autoimmune disorder can occur, which can then spread to different systems in the body. One by one all dhatus (tissues) in body get intoxicated and removing toxins from the body becomes challenging.
The primary aim of Ayurveda, when treating this kind of disorder is to restore body immunity so that the body can fight the disease itself. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on the person and tries to restore strength and vitality to the immune system and the body before attacking the disease causing factors.Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis (known as Amavata in Ayurveda) is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. It can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as in other organs in the body. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body's tissues are mistakenly attacked by their own immune system. Patients with autoimmune diseases have antibodies in their blood that target their own body tissues, where they can be associated with inflammation. Because it can affect multiple other organs of the body, Rheumatoid Arthritis is referred to as a systemic illness and is sometimes called rheumatoid disease. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints.Causes
Increased intake of indigestible, heavy and incompatible foods; having food at improper times; indigestion; intake of milk and milk products, especially yogurt; intake of meat of aquatic animals; lack of physical activity or doing exercise after having fatty foods are some of the common causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis. RA is a chronic autoimmune disorder the causes of which are not completely understood.
Epigenetic and environmental risk factors are recognized as playing a role in RA. Smoking may be the most significant non-genetic risk factor for RA in Caucasian populations, with RA being up to three times more common in smokers than non-smokers, particularly in men, heavy smokers, and those who are rheumatoid factor positive. Modest alcohol consumption may be protective.Symptoms
Improper food habits and sedentary lifestyle can lead to impairment of digestive fire, formation of ama (toxin) and vitiation of Vata (air). When a person indulges in Vata-aggravating diet and lifestyle, then this aggravated Vata circulates ama in the channels of the body and deposits it in the joints, causing Amavata.
Ayurvedic treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis starts with pacification of Vata and elimination of toxins from the body. Herbal medicines are administered to improve the digestive fire and prevent further formation of ama. Panchakarma massage therapies are quite useful in subsiding pain in Arthritic patients.
